Woman’s death in Houghton le Spring house fire

On Wednesday 26^th September, we were called to a house fire at the Aged Miners Home, Houghton le Spring. Upon searching the property firefighters tragically discovered a deceased woman.

Twelve firefighters in three fire engines from Rainton Bridge, Sunderland Central and Farringdon Community Fire stations were sent to the property arriving on scene at 09:54 to discover a well-developed fire. They used hose reels, breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation to tackle the fire. On entry to the house, they discovered a 52 year old woman in the bedroom.

North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) also attended the scene and confirmed that very sadly, the lady had died.

TWFRS Area Manager – Community Safety – Lynsey McVay commented: “This is terrible news for the family and friends of the lady. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to them at this very sad time.

Unfortunately, there were no working smoke alarms in this property and although crews did everything that they could, the conditions created due to the fire development, meant that the lady had already passed away prior to their arrival.

We would always urge everyone to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm and that they check it regularly in an attempt to prevent tragedies like this occurring.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is carrying out an investigation into the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: “At 9.47am on Wednesday September 26th, police received a report of a fire at a property at the Aged Miners Home, Houghton.

“Emergency services attended the address and the body of a 52-year-old woman was found inside the property.

“There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report will now be made for the coroner.”
