Councillor Barry Curran appointed new Chair of Tyne and Wear Fire Authority
At today’s meeting of the Tyne and Wear Fire Authority, Councillor Barry Curran was appointed as the new Chair. Barry has been a Councillor for St. Peter’s Ward in Sunderland since 2011 and is a former Mayor of Sunderland.
Born in Monkwearmouth, Barry was a gas fitter for 40 years before leaving to join Gentoo’s learning and development team.
Commenting on his appointment, Barry said:
“This is an exciting and challenging time to join the Fire Authority, especially with the new inspection regime starting for us, later on this year. I look forward to playing my part, along with all the other members of the Fire Authority, in ensuring we continue to deliver a great service for the communities of Tyne and Wear.”
Cllr Nick Forbes was appointed as Vice Chair, of the Fire Authority.
As well as the appointment of a new Chair, there are some new faces on the Fire Authority. The new members are:
- Cllr Tony Taylor – Sunderland City Council
- Cllr Richard Bell – Sunderland City Council
- Cllr Daniel Duggan – Gateshead Council
- Cllr Tom Woodwark – Newcastle City Council
Chris Lowther, Chief Fire Officer commented:
“I am looking forward to working alongside Barry, and our other new and existing Fire Authority members. I know that he and they will help us to retain our high level of performance and professional excellence in protecting the communities of Tyne and Wear. I would also like to thank our out-going members: Cllrs Emerson, Galbraith, Maughan and Renton for the support they have given us throughout their time as Fire Authority Members.”
