Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is led by the Chief Fire Officer, with support from other members of the Executive Leadership Team.

We’re accountable to the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority.

Operational structure

Our service borders County Durham in the south and Northumberland to the north.

This area is divided into 3 divisions – North, East and West.

Each division has its own fire safety department.

There are 17 fire stations across the 3 divisions. At station level, operational staff are divided into 4 shifts known as “watches” – Red, White, Blue and Green.

Each watch is managed by a Watch Manager, who reports to the Station Manager. The number of firefighters on a watch depends on the number and type of appliances at that station.

Station Managers report to Group Managers, who report to the Area Managers.

Area Managers are members of our Executive Leadership Team.

Control

Our Control Team is based at our headquarters in Washington.

Helped by specialist technology, they decide which crews to dispatch based on the address and incident type.
