State of the art new fire engines to serve Tyne and Wear

The first of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s new fire engines is now available to respond to emergencies from Birtley Community Fire Station.

During December, three more new fire appliances will be replacing older models at Newcastle Central, Washington and Farringdon fire stations, with another 10 due to be introduced across Tyne and Wear in 2021. Fire crews will benefit from the very latest technology and other features designed to improve firefighter safety and efficiency.

Chief Fire Officer Chris Lowther explained:  “Ensuring the safety of our crews and the communities we serve is our first priority, which is why these new appliances have been designed with the direct involvement of firefighters. A lot of hard work has gone into making sure that these new models will enable our crews to work safely and effectively both now and in the future, so that we can continue to provide a first class emergency response for years to come.”

Following a rigorous testing process, the first four fire engines were delivered to the Service in August and since then, all operational crews and technical services teams have completed training in their use and maintenance.

CFO Lowther continued: “Reaching the point where the new appliances are ready to respond to emergencies has been a real team effort and I’d like to thank all staff involved, as well as our Fire Authority for their continued support.

This is an exciting time for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. Thanks to efficient ways of working and prudent and effective budget control, we’re in a position where we can re-invest in our frontline after years of austerity.

Although there is still some uncertainty over our longer-term financial position, I firmly believe that new technologies and other innovations are key to making sure we can continue to keep Tyne and Wear safe.”
