Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service operates a range of Command Units, with the primary unit at West Denton Fire Station. Two smaller Forward Command Units are stationed at Sunderland Central and Colby Court Fire Stations.
The main unit is deployed to large incidents, providing command and control functions. The smaller units support the primary unit or are used for specific incidents (e.g., high-rise fires).

What is a Command Unit?
A Command Unit is a vehicle equipped with:
- A large working area for incident management.
- Computers and communications equipment for real-time coordination.
- Staffed by at least eight personnel, identifiable by their red and white chequered ‘Command Support’ tabards.
When is a Command Unit needed?
A Command Unit is dispatched to incidents involving five or more fire engines and multi-agency situations requiring enhanced command and coordination. Our Command Unit acts as a focal point for all bluelight partners on the incident ground.
