Incident Command (Level 3)
Our accredited Level 3 Award in Initial Incident Command in Fire and Rescue Services has been designed to develop and assess the knowledge and understanding of the U.K. Incident Command System and the practical performance of command skills of learners in Intermediate Incident Command following NOS EFSM2.

Delegates will receive the knowledge, skills, experience and confidence to support their professional development and skills relevant to the basic incident command system for initial response from the fire and rescue services.
This five-day course includes theoretical input from experienced instructors who are leaders in their field, combined with practical and simulated exercises which bring all the learning to life.
Following the completion of the award, participants will:
- Understand the key principles of the Incident Command System
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of personnel within the
- Incident Command Structure
- Understand the management of risk at operational incidents
- Understand effective communication at operational incidents
- Be able to plan an initial response to an operational incident
- Be able to implement actions at an operational incident to meet
- planned objectives
- Be able to close down the operational phase of an incident.
- Be able to review a response to an operational incident.
Incident Command (Level 4 Revalidation)
Our Level 4 Award in Initial Incident Command has been designed to develop and assess the knowledge and understanding of the U.K. Incident Command System and the practical performance of command skills in Intermediate Incident Command following NOS EFSM2.

Our delegates will receive the knowledge, skills, experience and confidence to support their continued professional development and develop knowledge and skills relevant to the intermediate incident command system for fire and rescue service. This Level 4 Award enables learners to be ready to work, but not yet competent, in incident command at the appropriate level.
This four-day course includes theoretical input from experienced instructors who are leaders in their field, combined with practical and simulated exercises which bring all the learning to life.
Following the completion of the award, participants will:
- Understand key roles and responsibilities within Incident Command
- Understand command and leadership skills within Incident Command
- Understand the application of effective decision-making during operational incidents
- Understand the principles of risk management at operational incidents
- Understand the methods of communication for operational incidents
- Understand joint working and interoperability
- Be able to review and determine the status of operational incidents
- Be able to assume responsibility for actions to support operational incidents
- Be able to review responses to operational incidents.
Breathing Apparatus Instructor (Level 3)
At Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, our Level 3 Award in Breathing Apparatus (BA) Instructor course has been designed to give a qualified breathing apparatus wearer the necessary skills and awareness to create, organise, lead, and instruct meaningful and safe BA sessions effectively.

We aim to give our delegates the knowledge, skills, experience and confidence to run their sessions once they have completed the 10-day course. All delegates will gain practical experience designing and running their exercises, receiving feedback from course instructors and other course attendees, and allowing the students to safely and confidently lead their own exercises.
The Level 3 Award in Breathing Apparatus Instructor qualification consists of two mandatory units, one of which is knowledge-based only, and the other is knowledge and skills-based.
Our course is based on the latest knowledge and trends within the fire sector and is aligned with National Operational Guidance and the Foundation of Breathing Apparatus.
Following the completion of the award, participants will:
- Understand the use of a breathing apparatus (BA) set and ancillary equipment
- Understand the safety procedures relating to BA instruction
- Understand the effects of the BA instruction environment
- Understand how to facilitate BA sessions
- Be able to plan breathing apparatus (BA) practical sessions
- Be able to lead familiarisation with BA set and ancillary equipment
- Be able to facilitate practical BA sessions
- Be able to debrief those involved in the BA session
Fire Safety Awareness (Level 1)
Our accredited Level 1 Award in Fire Safety Awareness provides learners with the opportunity to develop their understanding of fire safety to keep themselves and others safe in the workplace.

The qualification and learning outcomes are based on National Occupational Standards (NOS) related to fire safety awareness and follows the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) recommendation of good practice.
Over a half day period, learners will cover basic fire safety principles, including: causes of fires in the workplace, basic fire safety duties and responsibilities, principles of fire risk control, safe use of portable fire-fighting equipment and more. Delegates will be assessed via a multiple Choice Question Paper.
Following the completion of the award, participants will understand:
- Fire safety equipment checks
- Causes of fires in the workplace
- Costs of fires in the workplace for employers, employees and society
- Basic fire safety duties and responsibilities
- Actions to be taken in the event of a fire
- Principles of risk control and controlling risks
- Effective risk management
- Risk control and prevention measures
- Safe use of fire-fighting equipment
Fire Safety / Fire Warden (Level 2)
Our accredited Level 2 Award in Fire Safety / Fire Warden provides learners with the opportunity to develop their fire safety awareness to help ensure that they are keeping themselves and others safe at all times in the workplace.

During this one-day course, Learners will develop their knowledge and skills in fire safety, including: how fires are caused, the risks associated with fire, principles of fire safety management at work, understanding the role of a fire warden and more. Delegates will be assessed via a multiple Choice Question Paper.
This course also includes the practical application of fire extinguishers by trained and experienced Fire sector professionals.
Following the completion of the award, participants will understand:
- Roles and responsibilities of the nominated fire warden

- Hazards during and after a fire
- Fire and smoke spread
- Identifying and controlling fire hazards
