Situated on Gateshead’s southern border, Birtley Community Fire Station serves large rural areas, including Washington, Sunderland and Team Valley. Facilities within the station include a 16-seat meeting room available for hire.

Chopwell Community Fire Station
Chopwell Community Fire Station stands out as the only on-call station within the service area, operating in partnership with Northumbria Police. This station provides vital coverage to several nearby villages, including Chopwell, High Spen, High Field, Hamsterley, Blackhall Mill and Low Westwood,
On-call firefighters, who live within close proximity to the station, are employed on a flexible rota system. When emergencies arise, they are alerted via pager and respond promptly to provide critical services to the surrounding community.
This unique model ensures a rapid and efficient response to incidents in rural and semi-rural areas.

Swalwell Community Fire Station
Swalwell Community Fire Station operates in partnership with the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and houses an ambulance and a paramedic rapid response vehicle, alongside our own appliance and high volume pump. It serves western Gateshead, including the Metrocentre shopping complex.
